Stop Minister Chavan from poisoning our food

Bt Brinjal could be back because science and technology minister Prithviraj Chavan is trying to change the rules of the game.

Mr. Chavan pushed for Bt Brinjal in a letter he copied word for word from a study funded by biotech seed companies, including Monsanto. He is presenting an undemocratic GM bill to ease the legalisation of Bt Brinjal, rice, and more—without any public input. Mr. Chavan is supposed to serve the people of India. Instead, he’s serving the interests of biotech seed corporations.

Sign the petition asking the Prime Minister to stop Minister Chavan from poisoning our food. The petition says: “Minister Chavan has betrayed the public trust by doing the dirty work of biotech giants. The Prime Minister should throw out Chavan’s corrupt GM bill.

    Dear Dr. Manmohan Singh,

It would be apt to evolve a Maha Genetically Modified (MGM) Government, that can be free from the authority of Rascalocrats and Curroptocrats that rule us in our present state-of-the-art maha-hypocritic democracy. Innovations of an
un-mitigated Accountability at the very top of Ministrial Authority, a hefty Bribery Tax, extremely stiff penalty meted out to perpetrators of corruption and generous rewards to honestocrats could be some of the innovations that could only be formulated by an MGM-Government under your vision and leadership, to rid our future generations of a financially insecure life with its inevitable consequences of an impending social disaster.

This would be a far better alternative to alleviate the standard of living of an average Indian, and provide an un-mitigated Social Security to the aam public below the poverty line, than the Bt Brinjal.

Who is this Chavan anyway – is he a Biotechnologist/ Economist/Agriculturist/Scientist or even someone who helps formulte research on BT engineered food ? And are these the kind of people Dr.Manmohan Singh takes advice from – people who have not the interest of the Indian people at large.

  18. Gazala says:

Mr Manmohan Singh, how could you tolerate such inhuman people (Mr Chavan), who are so irresponsible & un-accountable and holding such positions in the country. Such people are more ruthless than the external terrorist.
On one hand you along with Mr Nilekani are backing a highly respectable & hopeful project of UID. While on the other hand Mr Chavan ruining the mankind.
This absolutely does not balance the equation of having a democratic country & visionary leaders (so called only).
Please save India & Poor Indians from Indians :(

  19. Mr.Singh.
HOpe u people(politicians)are well settled and u can can afford a lot of money for ur healh.

  21. Dr. Purushottam G. Kale says:

    Hon. Prime Mister,
It is my request to you that there is no dire need of a bill to form National Biosafety Protection Authority only because there is a public outcry on a GM crop. If the crop is realy safe, there can always be a Scientific Report (not the one published by the ‘interested party’) that can be published in National News Papers and a healthy debate on that.
Quenching the public opinions by passing bills that are anti-democratic is not the way.
Please view it in a sincere way.
    Thank you.
    Sincerely Yours,
    Dr. P. G. Kale

  36. Mangal Jain says:

    Dear Minister,
Do not introduce unnatural happenings in natural environment

  37. Chetan Haria says:

Let us leave naturaly……. not artificaly….

  38. Mala says:

Scientists should first learn to be humble and recognise the limits of their knowledge and of the implications, potential outcomes and hazards in dealing with inter-connected nature. They have simply no patience to study ecology and the environment but in the anxiety to publish and earn praise from fellow scientists, many paid off by Monsteranto and Cargill, will go to any lengths to claim ’scientific’ status for their fiddling.
As for Brinjal, as rightly pointed out, there is no shortage and no housewife in her right mind or a hotel employee pushes brinjal into a mechanical cutter. Each piece is examined. Moreover, brinjal is classified as a tamasic food and is to be taken in limited quantities as recommended by Indian medical texts as eaten in excess causes pruritis. What is the need to fiddle with this member of a large environmentally widespread plant family with many negative species (for human consumption). This is a classic example of ‘no need’ just ‘greed’. Now we have this foolish law to chain the country to the agro giants. Have any of these scientists contributed anything at all. First they should come out with a statement of grants and fund support for laboratories, equipment, studies and collaborations that they have obtained from the agro giants and then justify their stands with reference to the obvious obligations.
Perhaps Greenpeace can obtain a list of such funding from the main contenders like the Indian branches of these firms, the FCRA in Home Ministry and labs like Mahyco, MS Swaminathan Resch Foundation, the Agricultural Universities, their Professors, etc so that the public takes a knowledgeable view and not some foolish scientists bargaining for quid pro quos as often happens in the Biotech department.

  39. Sanjib Tripathy says:

    Dear Prime Minister,
Please do not allow Mr. Chavan in pushing this anti-national bill down the throat of the poor citizens of India. He is advocating the interest of Biotech engineers which will only serve the interest of the US and other European nations at the cost of long term economic hazard to be faced by India.

  40. Manas Dash says:

    Dear Prime Minister,

Accepting such an antinational bill would be against crores of poor Indians.

    Honorable P.M,

I humbly request you to stop Council of Ministers from framing policies ignoring the fundamental rights of common man in favour of MNC and monopoly companies. Now we feel that the Food Minister is going to surrender “the Right to Helthy Food of Common men” in favour of Biothech (Inland and Foreign) companies in the matter of Brinjal.

Hoping to see your strength in protecting the “Birth-Right and Fundamental Right” of each and every Indian as the most powerfull person within the democratic set-up of our country.
