Stop Minister Chavan from poisoning our food

Bt Brinjal could be back because science and technology minister Prithviraj Chavan is trying to change the rules of the game.

Mr. Chavan pushed for Bt Brinjal in a letter he copied word for word from a study funded by biotech seed companies, including Monsanto. He is presenting an undemocratic GM bill to ease the legalisation of Bt Brinjal, rice, and more—without any public input. Mr. Chavan is supposed to serve the people of India. Instead, he’s serving the interests of biotech seed corporations.

Sign the petition asking the Prime Minister to stop Minister Chavan from poisoning our food. The petition says: “Minister Chavan has betrayed the public trust by doing the dirty work of biotech giants. The Prime Minister should throw out Chavan’s corrupt GM bill.

Plz save our food & vegetation from contamination.

  25. Chandrasekaran.C says:

Dear Mr. PM, through out Chavan the Science and Technology minister who acts against the interest of people of India. We the people of India expect minimum service from our representative if not 100%.

  26. puneet says:

    hiiiii……
i think after careful examination GM foods should be allowed for customer use……….
In order to understand its benefits first of alll we need to understand what are the problems being faced by indian agricultural system today…..

    1. Due to uneven weather large no of crops are destroyed each year. Sometimes due to uneven rainfall all the crop of the farmer is destroyed.

    2. Nowadays farmers use a large amount of pesticides to control weeds and pests. This results in poisoning of food. A large no of diseases are related to food poisoning.

    3. The life time of the crops produced by farmers is very small (2-10 days). So it means if we transfer the food from one place to another then around 20-30% of food items are destroyed.

GM (GENETICALLY MODIFIED) foods help in overcoming these problems.

    1. GM crops makes the crops more resistant to harsh weather conditions.By using genetic engineering we can make crops which can even grow in very low water conditions.

    2. GM crops are resistant to pests and weeds. An excellent example of this is BT cotton. If we use GM crops we can reduce the amount of pesticides used by around 70-80%. So its a direct attack on pesticides companies. So these companies are creating wrong notions in the minds of people like
    # if you will eat GM food u will die
    # GM food is non veg ( TUMHARA DHARAM BHRAST HO JAYEGA)
    # GM food will change your genetic makeup
    # GM food will contaminate the environment

these are all wrong nations. Nothing can happen like that.

    3. GM crops help in increasing the ripening time of foods. So the foods does not get spoil quickly. Tomato is an excellent example.

So i would like the people should have the right knowledge then they should take decisions

  27. P.S.Sudhakar says:

    Dear Prime minister,
we trust you.But unfortunately in todays politics it is difficult to get totally honest team members. Therefore your responsibility is all the more to take care of your countrymen. Simply looking at this problem, while US, Europeand such other countries are not sure of genetically modified crops should we go ahead with them? Are we human subjects for their field trials?
we trust in your judgement. Please look into this.

  28. Bhushan says:

    Dear Mr. Prime Minister,
One thing I dont understand that how can you and your all party members or so called other politicians are so unaware that even you all and your next generations are going to have the same dangerous effect on health by having all these genetically modified food. If not for the country but atleast be aware for yourself. Your self awareness is something which will make a huge difference to the entire country, our mother earth and every indian.

    JAI HIND!

  29. vasundhara rao says:

DONT SPOIL INDIA BY ALLOWING GM PRODUCTS.YOU ARE ALSO THINK ABOUT THE PROBLUM, IF YOU ARE HAVIG RESPONSIBILITY

  30. Er.KOMAGAN says:

INDI’s spiritual soul would not allow such dust bin activity.

SURE, YOU WILL BE DEFEATED BY YOURSELF,TRICOLOR OF OUR FLAG IS STILL REMAIN.

  31. Balaji says:

My fundamental opposition to the Bill rests on the fact that by attempting to punish those who raise a voice, the Minister has – at one stroke – attemted to take away what the constitution guarantess, what we had waged a freedone struggle for and what is a basic human right. While the provision is couched in smart legal language, at the heart of the provision lies a draconian intent : to prosecute those who raise their voice against the sinister motives of those in power and those who make money. i am appalled at the fact that this provision has actually been tabled. Those who have resorted to this crime against democracy – including those who have drafted the clause, who have approved it – without reading though – and whose government is supporting it – should stand trial for gross betrayal. this again proves that the ‘largest democracy’ is nothing but an eyewash. This unconscious belief in the corridors of power has been made explicit by this provision. while the major arms of the state enjoy one immunity or the other, the common man is sought to be denied the basic of all human rights. what a travesty of fate! and what a shame! all those who fought for india’s freedome must be shedding a tear or two from their graves and this act of deceit by those who inherited the mantle of power..

  32. Rupen Shah says:

This minister is not a peoples man. We can see the betryal upfront from such moves. As such this government is almost sold off to multiantional corporations & companies like Dupont & Monsanto. See how the nucler deal was clicked some time back. People like Sharad Pawar, Kapil Sibbal, Prithviraj Chavan are hell bent to break the agriculture system in India & this is going to affect millions of people in India. They even care a damm about the environment. According to their motives the value of indian citizen is peanuts. Ask them to go to Europe or USA & they will know how valuable human life is considered. It is unfortunate that the government of India have such ministers & we the people have to tolerate them as this is Democracy. What good is such a democracy ?

  38. Swamy says:

I think we are all debating something that we neither know about nor are qualified to decide upon.

The air we breathe is contaminated
The water we drink is contaminated
Farmers are dying from pesticide related poisoining
People are subjected to pesticide poisoning daily in ALL vegetables that we eat!

Bt Brinjal came for commercialization after 6 years of rigorous scientific tests and now we all cluelesly are opposing this!

Sad to see that none of the people who have posted on this page have actually researched anything on this subject except one. Find that for yourselves!

The food security of India and the world are at stake here!

    Research before you post blindly.

GM food will be the way forward as we don’t have any other viable alternatives.

    Think about it:

    More mouths to feed daily
Less arable land available to cultivate
    Global Warming and erratic monsoons

    No food in 50 years!

    Think about it!

  39. Ritu says:

Before introducing into the market the Bt Brinjal can be subjected to safety & efficacy testing on animal models.

  40. Seetharam says:

Mr. Minister for Science & Technology,

You do not have a right to poison us. Before you even think of introducing the proposed bill, tell us how are you going to restrict the GMOs once they are realesed into the environment. The Govt is not even able to control sewage flowing into the rivers!

Being a practicing farmer myself, I know very well that there safe, time-tested & sustainable methods available to boost productivity and manage pests. There is absolutely noo need for dangerous technologies like BT.

Genetically Modified crops are beneficial – to the companies promoting these technologies and their supporters in the Govt and not for the people, farmers or the country.

Most importantly, introduction of GMOs into the environment is not reversible. We have already seen the disastrous consequences of the mindless promotion of certain unsustainable technologies by the Govt during the Green Revolution. Fortunately it is reversible.Just the fertilizer subsidy is 125000 crores annually and the food production is declining. Additionally, the chemicals are ruining the soil fertility and contaminating water.

Allow us (the farmers) to to feed the growing population by using sustainable techniques.

Once again – Our biodiversity, environment, health are too precious to be sacrificed for the interests of a few crazy people and companies. Give up the crazy ideas.

  41. Bharat Desai says:

    Dear P.M. Mr. Manmohanji,

Please do not “POISON” the Citizens of India by importing “BANNED” technologies
like BT/Hybrid/GM Crops/Tecnology in their own Countries by theit Governments,
from International MNCs who want to make a fast’BUCK’ by selling us Out-dated
technology & “THRUST” down the BPL citizens of India by our Ruling Government
for the last 60 years(For their OWN Selfish 10% BENEFITS) Don’t FORGET that
for the last 15/20 years you are Ruling the Indian State Like MODERN “KINGS” with a “MINORITY VOTE-BANK” and the same ‘Aam Aadmi’ who handed you the “RULER”
can also “TOPPLE” you as it did twice before.
