Stop Minister Chavan from poisoning our food

Bt Brinjal could be back because science and technology minister Prithviraj Chavan is trying to change the rules of the game.

Mr. Chavan pushed for Bt Brinjal in a letter he copied word for word from a study funded by biotech seed companies, including Monsanto. He is presenting an undemocratic GM bill to ease the legalisation of Bt Brinjal, rice, and more—without any public input. Mr. Chavan is supposed to serve the people of India. Instead, he’s serving the interests of biotech seed corporations.

Sign the petition asking the Prime Minister to stop Minister Chavan from poisoning our food. The petition says: “Minister Chavan has betrayed the public trust by doing the dirty work of biotech giants. The Prime Minister should throw out Chavan’s corrupt GM bill.

We need a bill for BioTech companies. Bill asking them to prove what they are selling is harmless not just to humans but this entire eco-system. And penalization them is they are unable to prove it’s advantages over disadvantages. Let this be a fare decision and not a monopoly(gunda raag) of any sect, for or against GM goods. Let the public have the discretion of whether they want to be long run guinea pigs.

Lastly, this is the only thought that comes to my mind.
Where the world is going organic, back to nature, my great India turns to technological excreta.Change is not always good and it’s good to be backward sometimes.

  2. Unbiased says:

First of all, GM foods have more nutrition, which does mean more vitamins.
Secondly, if people dont understand what GM food is and what it entails, stop embarrassing yourself by posting here.
Many of the people here say they trust Greenpeace. Great. Good for you.
If Greenpeace says go hurt yourself, I wouldnt think you would do it, would you? Already read up on things before address issues. Dont follow blindly.
Thirdly, Food Inc. is a great movie, but its one sided. And in Capitalism, its a fight for profit. You cant expect companies or businesses to be noble and profit.
Fourthly, the pollution and dirty water in India will kill YOU faster than GM foods. Even the pesticides in the non GM crops will kill you faster.
Fifth, GM crops are getting all over the place, read the facts. They got their 2 billionth hectare 2 years ago, its only increasing. And Europe HAS GM CROPS as well.
Therefore, study, read or research some facts before you post uneducated comments and really really embarrass yourself.
GM crops has its advantages and disadvantages. But I would pick more nutritional and less pesticide based crop than MORE PESTICIDE based crop that is available in India.

And for the idiot who says I am in politics, looks to me you are being led BLINDLY by a HERD mentality. You are already in politics my friend!
And Fatima, my favorite uneducated person on this board, GM is not banned anywhere in the US or UK or any other ‘1st’ countries.
Doing a little research yourself wont kill you. No wonder we elect idiotic politicians everyday, people like you will believe ANYTHING.

I am a firm believer in science and FACTS. Not hearsay and fairy tales.

It’s a choice between two evils, choose the lesser one.

  3. Unbiased says:

    To Priyanka,
to put it ‘farely’, we are guinea pigs for everyone else.
GM crops dont claim they are harmless.
Tell me one food product in this world that is ‘harmless’. You do realize you get adulterated milks and pesticide sprinkled crops right?
If you dont know that, you are living in a dream world.

BTW, be aware of fake medicines.

Also, research what Organic food is and what are its advantages and disadvantages.

Lastly, if anyone here can make organic food affordable and not cause farmers to commit suicide and still be buyable for normal public, please go ahead.
If you think you can provide large yield of crops with more nutrition to a wider number of people with the same amount of resources, challenge GM. Otherwise dont even bother posting comments here.
Its easy to say organic is better or dont make GM foods, but think about the million farmers who want to sustain here, think about how cheap the food prices are right now and think about the millions WHO CANT AFFORD EXPENSIVE ORGANIC food.

To all the organic food supporters, DONATE your money to the poor people who cant afford organic crops. Put your money where your mouth is, literally.

If the PM has to depend on public debates for accepting or rejecting any proposal then our country will have a very bleak future. If we take pride in being the strongest democratic country in the world then we should also have faith in the elected members of the parliament.Afterall we only have elected them. While there is so much of hulla-bullu on what a particular minister is planning to do why do we forget that another minister has already managed to stall the same.In the different states of India the views of people on any subject are very divergent. There are enough number of leaders of the likes of Raj Thakery who inspite of being outside the parliament have enough clout to influence the mind of their followers. If they want they can manage much larger number of signatories in favour of Bt Brinjal.Hence have faith in democracy and the democratically elected representatives. The current PM is sensible enough to weigh the pros & cons of any subject before taking any decision………..

What is your original name ????? Unbiased???? I think you have a great point of view about this fact….please tell us your real identity….GM foods have both advantages & disadvantages. I think there should be a board or commission to investigate the nutritional quality of this GM food. Now-a-days we used to take some foods like – Tomato sauce, Mango juice, Packaged food, Potato Chips, Cold drinks etc. We all know that they bear some injurious agents which may lead us towards death. But we have been taking them since their birth, without creating any petition. Strangely, the mentioned food products are also “made by human” & “disturbing the nature”. Everyone among you will agree with me that the above mentioned products are not very nutritious. So,why we are taking them, without creating any petition???? GM foods are somewhere different. Generally they are produced under the supervision of renowned scientists through a well scientific environment. They are so much helpful to reduce food problem, creating disease less foods. ……… But if the nutritional quality of that foods will not reach the quality of our natural foods, there must be a petition. But at first we should be sure about the quality of that foods. This can easily be done with a well Quality Control Board. If packaged drinking water, iodized salt, can be prepared without harm, GM food can also be manufactured thus.

  7. Jaskirat Singh says:

For Aparna and those who compare GM foods with colas and chips .. GM is much worse not only because of its health concerns but also simply because you can choose not to take colas and chips .. but how will you avoid GM foods? No one can tell the difference by looking at BT-Brinjal and ordinary brinjal.

Secondly when seeds get mixed up .. no farmer can grow organic even when he wants to.

There are even more dangers but I will just keep it short.

  8. Dr. Pradip K. Datta says:

G.M food will destroy the biodiversity of the country. It will be dangerous for the farmers and food safety of our country. Only the multinational companies will be benefited by exploiting our country. We will be at the mercy of the companies. Effects of GM crops on human health has not been studied fully yet .

  9. Logic says:

    Hello,

this is to all GM supporters:

    1. GM food uses bacterial, viral genes from within to make them pest resistant. In short they have pesticides within themselves. So you cant even wash them to get rid of externally applied chemicals.

    2. The 2 companies holding the patent and distribution rights are – Monsanto and Mahyco. The GM crops are not productive. Means that you cant harvest on the seeds that the GM crops give on one harvest. So you need to buy seeds again and which will be only provided by these 2 MNCs.

    3. Dear Mr.Prithviraj Chavan has no definitive answer to why we should adopt BT Brinjal.

    4. Last but not the least WHATS THE BIG HURRY ? India already produces excess/surplus Brinjals.

Mr. Prithviraj Chavan is in a real hurry…why ?
Why not let there be proper tests before introducing the GM crops ?
Why is he trying to suppress the people who are talking against of GM crops ?
Why are the state governments deprived of a say in the Gm issue ?
    Why ?

  10. Arijit says:

Mr. Unbiased, What I read from your post is only that this Bt. Brinjal is more nutritious. Till now we are all having natural food with pesticides (apparently which we can wash) and do all Indians who sit in front of their computer to give you this reply look famished? The rest all are profit related and image of these companies.Would I wash their profit and image to have it fried with their Bt. Brinjal? The other point which you mentioned is the poison waters in India. Well these Food MNCs are quite wealthy..Why dont they divert their attention to make distilled water or even better mineral water and fill up big reservoirs and tanks with these so that nutritiouos water is available easily…
Enough of chitchat…Can all of you GM supporters tell me where we are heading??…Stop all natural food??..Turn those plots into their famous office campus where herds of people will enter everyday to make these foods???No land no plot no countryside nothing..Turn this world into a campus of high rises..And then make this earth’s atmosphere rot?? So that for every campus that is made they give crores of rupees to the ministers and they make their huge profits???You are in the wrong lane my friend…Try to see the future….Dont kill our mother…
