Genetic Engineering explained
Genes are what give all organisms their traits or characteristics. Genetic Modification (GM) is a relatively new and poorly understood technology through which new organisms are created by using genes from other unrelated organisms. Using genetic engineering, scientists put characteristics of one organism into another, for e.g., genes from fish that can survive in very cold water have known to be inserted into strawberries’ to make them frost resistant.
Currently, genetic engineering is mainly used to produce two types of crops.
1. Herbicide-tolerant crops: these are genetically engineered to resist herbicide farmers spray on the crop to kill weeds and represent 80% of GE crops.
2. Bt crops: these are genetically engineered to produce their own pesticide to kill certain insect pests and represent 20% of GE crops.
How does it differ from cross-breeding or other forms of biotechnology?
The key difference is that genes are moved between species.
Traditional breeding involves breeding organisms within the same species. In genetic engineering, however, genes are forced to move across often quite different species. For example, this kind of manipulation has seen cow genes inserted into soy beans, moth genes into apples, rat genes into lettuce, spider genes into goats and even human genes into rice.
Similarly, while genetic engineering is a form of biotechnology, what sets it apart from many other gene technologies (such as cloning and gene therapy) is that it involves transferring genes across species.
The GE industry is built on the premise that genes and their functions can be isolated, patented, spliced into an organism, and controlled. However, several recent studies have called into question this simplistic view of the science of genetic engineering.
For example, a 2007 study published in the leading scientific journal Nature reveals that genes appear to operate in a complex network where they react, interact and overlap with each other in ways we still do not understand. This research raises serious questions about the established ways in which we assess the safety of GE crops.
Is it safe to eat?
Genetic Engineering may affect food safety in ways that we cannot predict. It may happen through gene disruption or instability leading to new toxins being produced; the new protein produced by the foreign gene may cause allergies or toxicity illness.
There have been sporadic studies conducted by independent scientists and the findings are rather disturbing.
i. Rats subject to transgenic potatoes were observed to have had adverse effects in their vital organs including the kidney, thymus, and gastronomic muscle.
ii. Allergic reactions can be caused either by a protein known for its allergenic properties introduced into a transgenic plant or due to unknown structural
iii. After a decade of research, mice, which were being fed GE peas, were detected with lung inflammation.
iv. Food allergies occur in one to two per cent of adults and six to eight per cent of children; therefore, children would be most vulnerable to any allergens that may have gone undetected in GE food.
v. Also seen in the rats was stunted growth, impaired immune systems, potentially precancerous cell growth in the intestines, inflamed kidneys and lung tissue, less developed brain, enlarged livers, pancreases and intestines and higher blood sugar.
iv. Genes can cross from the food we eat to the bacteria in our stomachs. These may include antibiotic-resistant genes that are often used as marker genes in GM technology. In the long run this may make humans and animals resistant to anti-biotics.
v. Genes are also sometimes inserted from animals and plants that do not usually form part of the human diet. There has been much talk about inserting genes from venomous insects such as scorpions into rice. Other manipulations may sound less horrific but may be more dangerous.
No scientific consensus has been reached regarding the safety of GM food for human consumption. Some believe that GM food has been brought into the market too soon without proper long term safety tests.
What about other countries?
The European Union has a ban on growing GM crops in the country. As far as packaged food products are concerned, there are not allowed to be manufactured within the European Union, but if they are imported from outside, they required to be labeled as containing GM by law, so that a consumer buying these products can actually make a conscious choice. At present in our country, no such legislation exists. Therefore it is the onus of all of us as consumers to ask the food companies to give us that choice.
Consumers from many nations across the world have taken progressive steps to demand that they be informed about what goes into their food. In Europe, Japan, China, Middle East, Australia, New Zealand and some African nations GM fruits and vegetables or processed food containing GM ingredients have to be labeled to let consumers make a well informed choice. Due to increasing consumer pressure food companies are selling GM free milk even in the USA, the mecca of GM crops.
How do GE crops affect the environment?
There is growing scientific evidence that GE crops are harmful to biodiversity and the environment. Furthermore, once GE crops are released into the environment they cannot be recalled. As living organisms they can reproduce and pollute indefinitely.
The introduction of herbicide-tolerant GE crops to the US has resulted in a huge increase in both herbicide use, and the incidence of herbicide-resistant weeds.
Roundup, the herbicide sold by Monsanto in conjunction with its Roundup Ready GE crops, has been shown to be a potential endocrine disrupter — that is, it could interfere with our hormones. It is also toxic to certain wildlife, such as tadpoles.
The introduction of GE canola has been shown to have serious biodiversity impacts. For example, a UK government study found there were 24% fewer butterflies in the margins of GE canola fields because there were fewer weed flowers (and hence nectar) for them to feed on. In addition, there were fewer seeds for birds.
The use of Roundup on GE soy has also been shown to have an adverse impact on soil health, leading to reduced amounts of beneficial nitrogen-fixing bacteria in the soil.
Insect-resistant GE crops (termed Bt crops) have been shown to be toxic to “non-target” organisms (such as butterflies) and beneficial insects (such as green lacewings). They also threaten soil and water ecosystems, since many Bt crops secrete Bt toxins from the root into the soil. Agricultural wastes from Bt maize have been identified entering water courses.
Bt crops are intended to prevent the need for three applications of insecticide. Yet Bt maize varieties continuously release a toxin into the environment in quantities 3000–5000 times higher than the sprays used for non-GM farming.
In 1935, some 3000 imported cane toads were introduced to Australia to control native cane beetle populations. Today, cane toad numbers exceed 200 million, threatening local biodiversity. We learnt an important lesson from this — playing around with natural ecosystems can have unpredictable effects which are extremely difficult to undo. This is just as true for the genetic engineering of crops.
In fact, the risks associated with GE crops may be greater – pollination through open air exacerbates the potential for contamination and hampers containment.
Are GE crops good for farmers?
GE crops radically change the nature of farming, transferring control of seed from farmers to agrochemical companies such as Monsanto. Contamination from GE crops also threatens the integrity of traditional farming crops and affects access to markets.
Seed for GE crops is owned by agrochemical companies under patent law. This enables them to set conditions on farmers using the seed — for example, requiring farmers to pay royalties or demanding that farmers purchase new seed each season rather than sowing seed saved from previous harvests. GE crops bind farmers into legally enforceable, restrictive and onerous agreements.
In Canada and the United States, where GE crops have been sowed for over 12 years now, these companies aggressively pursue legal action against farmers for patent infringement. Many of these are farmers unknowingly growing GE crops on their land as a result of contamination. Canadian canola grower, Percy Schmeiser, was sued by Monsanto because GE canola was growing on his land as a result of contamination. Monsanto successfully argued patent infringement.
There is also a much larger economic cost for farmers across the board.
Again in North America, conventional growers are discovering that GE crops from neighbouring fields have become weeds that cannot be sprayed off with herbicides because they have inbuilt resistance. The Royal Society of Canada has warned that most of the country’s prairie land is now contaminated with herbicide-resistant canola weeds, the removal of which raises farm costs.
US and Canadian farmers are discovering a further problem with GE crops —export markets won’t buy them. Following the introduction of GE canola in Canada, sales to Europe dried up. The same is true of US corn, which is no longer sold to Europe.
Monopolising the seed market and denying farmers their ancient right to save, exchange and replant seeds is not a solution to poverty.
A United Nations report involving 400 scientists concluded that GE crops were not a solution to soaring food prices.(1) It found little evidence to support claims that GE crops increase yields. In fact, the report warned that the patents associated with GE crops actually pose problems.
World hunger will only end when the underlying causes of poverty are addressed. Poverty prevents people from securing their basic right to food either because they have no means to purchase food or they have no access to the farmland and natural resources necessary to meet basic food needs. GE crops do nothing to address the poverty that causes hunger. In fact, they threaten to make it worse by putting the control of the world’s food supply into the hands of a few giant multinational companies.
In developing countries, straightforward solutions that empower the poverty stricken are among the most effective ways to reduce hunger and secure sustainable livelihoods. For example, a major study from the United Nations concluded that organic farming offers Africa the best chance of breaking the cycle of poverty and malnutrition it has been locked in for decades. The study analysed 114 projects in 24 African countries, finding that yields more than doubled where organic, or near-organic, practices were used. That increase in yield jumped to 128% in east Africa.
High-tech agricultural technical packages, in contrast, are expensive and often accentuate inequalities, contributing to landlessness and food insecurity.
Ending world hunger also requires confronting bad land stewardship practices that lead to permanent environmental degradation. GE crops that tie farmers to using chemicals promise to make this situation worse, not better, as well as posing new environmental risks.
What is Bt brinjal?
Bt brinjal is a transgenic variety of brinjal, which contains a gene (Cry 1Ac), artificially introduced into its genome, mainly from a soil bacterium called bacillus thuringienesis (Bt). This is said to give the brinjal plant resistance against insects like the Brinjal Fruit and Shoot Borer (Leucinodes orbonalis) and Fruit Borer (Helicoverpa armigera).
Who is developing Bt brinjal, and why?
Bt Brinjal is being developed in India by Maharashtra Hybrid Seeds Company (Mahyco), a subsidiary of the multinational Monsanto. Although they claim that genetically modifying crops will increase yield, this has not been proved in the history of GM crops, for any crop anywhere in the world.
By controlling the seeds, multinationals are slowly and systematically taking over the entire food system, multinationals gain to profit at the cost of both farmers and consumers alike.
Will Bt brinjal benefit farmers or consumers?
Bt brinjal has been developed to provide resistance to only one pest. It does not provide resistance to other pests, which will continue to attack the plant. Moreover, over time, even Shoot Borer will develop resistance to this variety of genetically modified brinjal, and will need to be replaced with a different variety of modified brinjal. Bt cotton is case in point. Also, pollination will ensure that all indigenous varieties of the species will eventually be wiped out, thereby completely wiping out biodiversity, which is so crucial for the survival of any species.
As far as consumers are concerned, there is no evidence to suggest that plants that Bt brinjal will be safe for consumption in the long run. In general, there are several health concerns as far as GM crops are concerned, which have not been understood, let alone addressed.
All in all, genetically modified crops are known to neither benefit the farmer nor the consumer.
How can you differentiate between Bt brinjal and non Bt varieties of brinjal?
Bt brinjal does not look any different from non Bt varieties. They cannot be differentiated just by looking at them. In fact, the only way to tell them apart is elaborate and expensive laboratory tests. This leaves consumers with no choice in the matter.
What is the current status of Bt Brinjal?
Mahyco, a biotech company has been field testing Bt Brinjal though there is almost no consumer awareness on GM food and its impact on health. Although it has completed field trials, scientists, consumers, farmers… almost all stakeholders are concerned that no adequate tests have been done to prove it bio-safe i.e. safe for consumption or release into the environment.
Despite the concern, the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (the GEAC) has given a go ahead for the environmental release of Bt Brinjal. The final decision will be taken by Jairam Ramesh, Minister for Environment and Forests in February 2010.
If this goes through, Bt Brinjal would become the first edible GM product in the country, and the first GM vegetable anywhere in the world. This will also open the floodgates for the 56 other crops, which are undergoing various stages of trial across the nation.
What is my part as a consumer?
There are no laws in India today that require major food companies to have a policy on GMs. This means that the companies have varied positions on GMs and some of them do not even take a stand on the issue! Also, since there is no legislation either that requires GM products to be labeled differently; this means that we will not even know when GM products land up in our kitchens! As a consumer, you have every right to know what is inside your food and ask the companies to take an initiative to ensure safe food for all!
So what do you want me to do?
As a consumer you have the right to safe food! Take action to stop this disaster now! You cannot become a lab rat for these experiments in food!

Oops..this is really alarming news for us!!! Thanks for bringing this for public aware.I will definitely take care of these products which you have put in your safe food guide here after. Thanks a ton.
Alas! I didnt even know I was consuming nothing less of a slow poison!
Hey,
Lets do something to be posted this matter on news channels and print news.
and advice them to initiate some debate to country’s Agro scientists and Beurocrats
may be from ICAR and other respective and responsible organisation.
thanks green peace for awareness and responsibility but all mnc as well companies must comply environment laws andd protection together only we can save our planet
oh my god, i surely dont want to be a lab rat…
“These mad scientists are totally out of control, They will completely destroy life on this Planet but before they do this, monsters will be created as in days of old. Which is why that old technology advanced civilisation were destroyed, you cannot mess with nature without being punished.”
Would like to know what our dear politician cum leaders who are supposed to be leading the countrys health policy are doing right now… no prizes for guessing whose lobby wins out there…. public or the company! While our children are unassumingly consuming products of Nestle , their children would be thriving on foods imported from Europe !!
I even hate You for all of evel You do our to our palnet, to ourselfs and to the animals!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It was written do Nestle
Yikes! This is really alarming! I didn’t know a thing about Genetically Modified food. Thanks Greenpeace!
I understand the double standard aspect, but..
Is GM food unsafe? or there is inadequate information on these? The two things are different.
Is there any scientific literature that has studied GM food’s effects in humans? About food allergy, even imported non GM grain can elicit that. A documented food allergy in rat would not necessarily mean allergy in humans. Genes can be transmitted across species only if there is a vector invovled. Food that we eat is processed, cooked and finally digested. So how do you say a scorpion gene would get into human genome???? Please provide references. i am searching the NML and pubmed websites too for papers on GM food.
I understand your opposition, but please provide rational examples.
Looking forward to hear from you.
Dear manish,
There are a lot of studies which indicate GM could cause allergies, toxicity to liver and kidney and even abnormal growth problems in animals.
but, as the crop is patented and comanies have control on it, most of the studies that have been done are done by the comapnies for regulatory requirements.
therefore, the studies that show any negative efffect are less and we should each of them as more important as they are done by impartial independant scientsts.
we have compiled some of them in this report: http://www.greenpeace.org/india/press/reports/the-story-of-genetically-engin
hope it helps.
beyond the health effects, which are an immediate threat, are also the stuff about farmers rights and the myths about high yields of GM crops.

Someone picked this campaign and channeled a lot of money, time, web space and riled supporters into it and now GP has to find the most ridiculous and twisted ways to keep the campaign afloat.
A word to GP: Honesty would help, come clean… Do not slander a company for something they don’t do. Reword your poll statement. Apologize to the company and clear their name.
Reaffirm the stance of the poll-ers, hopefully that would be ‘Indians never would want GE food’.
And then bow out!
Maybe you’d salvage some of your credibility.

GM food should be illegal worldwide. Why have the global leaders not taken any action to press the emergency stop button on GM factories???

While I full heartedly, even passionately support Greenpeace’s activism against climate change and environmental pollution, I think the whole controversy about GM is not entirely fair for the scientific community involved in genetic research.
This is creating an uncalled for frenzy among people calling GM “poison” and all things involving relevant and very important studies of genetics in the age of overpopulation and food shortage as dangerous and illegal. It’s turning biotechnology into a farce which, in my opinion, is similar to anti-abortionists and anti-euthanasia campaigns. I do condemn some unscrupulous businesses, as the perpetrators of the Chinese baby food poisoning case, and even to some degree some large and powerful corporate decisions to jump the gun on GM products.
GM food however is a reality and will be inevitable as a choice for better and wholesome nutrition for millions, and totally safe in most cases just breeding cows for higher milk productivity has been for hundreds if not thousands of years. “Tampering” with nature is why we are humans, but it’s not always dangerous or fatal tampering… Had it not been for such tampering we would probably be extinct by now.
At the same time we have to be careful, yes. If you study the history of mad cow disease and similar diseases and really try to understand what caused it and as a result begin to comprehend what makes anything unsafe for humans “genetically”, the type of oversimplification which implies “biotechnology” is bad is nothing but irrational fear of genuine research and advances in technology: it is not healthy at all.
Irrational fears like this are similar to fear of flying. Air crashes occur. But the number of people dying in air crashes is just a fraction of people killed or maimed or killed on road accidents. However would you want to ban roads, railways and flying just because of one or two reported air crashes. No, you would want better safety standards and phasing out “badly engineered” aircrafts. The reports on GM food accidents are not a bit over estimated. This FAQ should include exact statistics against products and more details as Greenpeace often publishes. Charts and comparisons with other food product effects (especially) diary and meat products from bred animals should also be published.
Yes, checks and balances on GM products like all other food products should be strict and mandatory. At the same time, Greenpeace should also be involved perhaps in more anti-tobacco campaigns much more strongly than raising hell against anti-biotechnology and take it to an absurd extreme.
Before reacting to my comments, I would also recommend people to read the book “Genome” by Matt Ridley thoroughly which explains aspects of genetics to non-scientific readers. Here’s my review of the book:
http://antipoliticalindian.blogspot.com/2009/10/two-book-reviews.html
@Shubhojoy: so, u say that we should risk our lives for the advancement of the scientific research that according to u has produced an inevitable alternative of nutrition? live for the day to see tomorrow!
GP, thanks for bringing out the topic. had no idea abt this. it’s just not acceptable that Nestle & other companies trick the consumers at their own expenses! let’s fight it together!
@Amit: No, I did not mean risking our lives, I meant that there is little risk, if any, after proper checks and research, if implemented at par with pharmaceutical industries. Normally scientists do that BY DEFAULT, but yes, the action should be at the level of govt. to check corporate decisions which are inevitably taken almost exclusively under one principle: profit. However, in democracies, it’s the governmental institutions and non-governmental bodies who should be given watchdog status to validate safety… that’s about all that is needed. As for tobacco, that is what Greenpeace should be militantly against, and possibly take on… are they up to it? Tobacco kills more than all GM or many other ingestion related illnesses …
I am a person who has interned for Greenpeace few years back and i very well know the background from which the whole anti GM campaign has started. I certainly do appreciate Greenpeace’s intentions to prevent anything bad from happening to people.
But being a rational human being, i am forced to ask one question..Where does Nestle say that they use GM ingredients in the food products they sell in india… did a lot of research to find out that..but nothing of that sort has come out. In fact something more interesting has come out in this pursuit… I found out that in the Nestle India factories, they procure material from only those suppliers who have Non GM certification…
Coming to the greater question of Nestle’s stance on the future, again a debatable one. I am not quite sure what is right for a common man like me and i am pretty sure that neither Nestle or Greenpeace has enough scientific credibility, as of now to deem it good or bad…
But more importantly, as a common man quite disturbed by the allegation, i would like Greenpeace to come out with the proof of where exactly Nestle said that it uses GM ingredients in India???
Perhaps, to do justice to the spirit of the rainbow warrior….
Hi,
I dont want to eat GM foods!
I would also want to campaign against it

This demands immediate call for action..Letz come together and drive away this monster called GM Crops from entering our country.
thanx….greenpeace…i was nt aware of the unexplained ad dangerous part of GM crops n vegetables…have read it in 12th..but it could be so threatening to us is now very much clear….
it must not be allowed..nd we all should help more and more people know and understand the danger it poses to us…
First of all I thank to Greenpeace to reveal these GM foods. Otherwise how can we know this. It is against the God’s creation and the nature. Love the nature.

If only we could educate more people… on a wider scale.. most are left ignorent to this danger, and if they knew about the risks and uncertainties, wow- we could really get a lot of support against the contamination in India. peace out everyone, lets make this world a more edibale place
Thanks a lottt to Green peace for revealing such an important fact. We are not aware of these dangerous GM food..and its effects to our lives.
Stop GM food…Its against nature..
Pls educate our frnds ,collegues & people on this GM food and save our dear Earth & our future too..

Good site, I really found it to be informative. I am looking forward to visiting once again to see what is fresh.
I am a supporter of Green movement. At the same time I am also concerned with global and our national food scarcity. I know these multinationals have no concern for poor people. Multinationals in Drug Industry are known to work with evil designs, their only motive is profit by hook or crook. Thus I have no reason to believe that the GM companies are any way better than the Pharmaceutical Industry. Thus I am in a dilemma between the HUNGER on one side and EXTREMELY UNRELIABLE BIG INDUSTRY. Then again it cannot be ignored that some of the advancements in drug industry are contributions of such unreliable industrial houses. It is possible that they are taking advantage of rapidly growing GLOBAL HUNGER with inadequately researched GM food. HUNGRY PEOPLE CANNOT WAIT FOR A LONG PERIOD for well researched data to feed them. I cannot have absolute faith on the profit oriented industry. Failure of the Socialist Governments has encouraged the Profiteer to steer everything to their free choice. May be it would have been better to wait for more dependable data before allowing them entry to our country. May be I am confused.
We will be given poison only in future unless oppose now…

Yes! GM crops are inherently unsafe.
GM crops would have a lot of unforeseen & unforeseeable dangers. There are good possibilities that they may give rise to new & unknown species or strains of pathogens, new & unheard of diseases.
Some studies have shown that eating GE food containing could encourage gut bacteria to develop antibiotic resistance. Transfer of transgenes to gut bacteria may present long-term chronic exposure, since the foreign protein may continued to be produced inside of us after we no longer consume the GM food.
If I can say so, it is like creating a frankenstein’s monster. The MNCs have “nothing else” but their own cheap profits in mind. This started in US & is spreading wings into our country now (may be bcoz it is very easy here to fool or bribe our babus & get permissions than to bribe European officials or people)

This “must” be stopped before all of us are irretrievably sunk in this mire.
It is the sinister plan of the big corporations along with the UN and WHO to propagate the “AGENDA 21″ ( google and youtube this term). Disguised as sustainable development , the AGENDA 21 actually is to depopulate the planet by 90% , yes mass extermination through scientific tyranny. Many simultanious attacks would be carried out in the name of scientific good to humanity and in the name of ” It is good for you and for your benifit” to name a few of these open attack on us are given below ( people please do your research and search these given below terms in youtube and google before the UN takes down the internet)
1) Genetic Modified Food : They say it is good for you and would give highest yield etc but in reality it is the biggest weapon to kill as the GE food create many allergies and permanently damage the cells of intestines , drop your immune system, create cancer and sterile the reproductive system.
2) Chemtrails (or Weather Modifaction or in India it is called cloud seeding) : Biggest fraud of its kind and would be the largest weapon of mass extermination. They say it is for your good , for you we can squeeze extra rain for you and not worry about the persistent heavy chemical spray thrice daily for all 7 days/365 a year because the chemical spray is in permissible amounts ….*BullSh*T , people they are lying te metals found in chemical spray are BARIUM , ALUMINUM and SILVER IODIDE (now you are smart generation needless to say “go and research the harmful effects o these chemicals on human body” ). This is the perfect plan to attack on our respiratory system and spray whatever and whenever they want on us. The USA f*cked up all the world weather by doing it for more than 10 years and also through UN this has started in whole of the Europe , Australia , North Africa , South America and India. The UN – WHO created the draughts and now selling this cloud seeding/chemtrails to India. Citizens of India wake up all your tax money is sprayed on you as chemicals everyday , OPEN YOUR EYES and LOOK UP. I have lived in the UK for more than 7 years and I have seen alll of these things happening there and I was wrong in my believe that nothing sort of this will happen in India but I am shocked to see that India is fully sold.
3) False Man Made Earthquakes. The USA posses the HAARP technology ( yes youtube HAARP and also google it) and on will they can create earthquake of 7.5 or above anywhere , so if India resist to their sinister plans of selling the whole country to then in the name of NEW WORLD ORDER , you know next would be series of earthquakes in Indian Metros , terrorising to take away all your freedoms.
4) Terrorism: Wake Up Indians the AL-QAIDA is funded by CIA and the whole war on terror is the biggest hoax to take away your civil liberties in the name of providing safety against terrorist. So always remember when the UN – USA says in the news that terrorist can do another 26/11 in India , it means the CIA is planning another one or if news says their can be no tolerance and India will go for war against Pakistan that also means that this is the UN-USA plan to destablilise the region and create war situation to get their selfish and sinister motives fulfilled.
5) C02 the cause of global warming : Biggest fraud of the millinium , there are more than 30.000 top enviornmental and climatologist scientist who have signed the petition against this fraud , it is the SUN CYCLE that causes temprature variation on all the planets even Mars polar caps are melting so is the saturn , uranus , even plutos. The NASA knew this and because this is an AGENCY and publically funded by BID CORPORATIONS and the agenda of big corporations was to get huge benifit and UN-WHO could tax whole of the planets population and control the lives of people in the name of C02. In real fact the more the C02 better would be for the plant growth , the better the plant growth better would be our food reserves and atmospheric oxygen level. GOD is great and so does HIS power of devine balance provided to Mother Nature.
6) Pharmachutical and Vaccination Tyranny : Dear Indians this is the best weapon of WHO to depopulates us, what more should I say the H!N! is patented …YES you can have a patent on anything if you design or manufacture it and this is exactly done by the WHO and they have spread it in the world. Do your research again; youtube and also google” H1N1 MANMADE”. All of the vaccination contain” THEMEROSAL” which is MERCURY metal and they say oh its with in permissible limits …BULLSH*T …do your own research and see how many cases of AUTISM in children who are vaccinated.
7) Full Body Scanners at AIRPORT : Most dangerous as you would be bomabrded by the spectrun of radiations which ofcourse they would says it is good for you and harmless but even a DONKEY KNOWS that ionizing radiation in the X-ray spectrum damages and mutates both chromosomal DNA and structural proteins in human cells. If this damage is not repaired, it can lead to cancer. New research shows that even very low doses of X-ray can delay or prevent cellular repair of damaged DNA, raising questions about the safety of routine medical X-rays.
Very informative article. I’ve found your blog via Google and I’m really glad about the information you provide in your posts. Btw your sites layout is really broken on the Chrome browser. Would be really great if you could fix that. Anyhow keep up the good work!
dear jai,
i am currently a biomedical student at DU…i have always believed that GM foods will eventually disturb our food chains and may even cause severe allergic reactions….also, anything and everything inappropriate amount and dosage is cancer-inducing,they just are not recorded. But just out of curiosity—has BT brinjal being a carcinogen? Which tests have been applied–AMES test? or is it just a biostatistical analysis? could u please send me some related reasearch papers-preferably from indian journals
we shd not at all intake this bt brinjal as it is very bad and may cause diseases where it becomes difficult to consume and it is also harmful
Why do we love to tamper with nature? When there are so many doubts raised about GM foods why are governments in such a hurry to implement these food policies? Anyway, we need to give credit to minister Jairam Ramesh for his wise decision.
in a country like india theres no safe guard whatsofar available to consumers even for normal food.we have synthetic milk, synthetic mava(for preparing sweets),not a single food stuff have markings, under these circumstances it wud be disastrous to introduce GE foods.besides many in india are religiously vegetarians.the jains n many hindus included.even these religous groups wont be knowing if they are consuming animal genes in a seemingly harmless looking vegetable.the muslims may not know tht the vegetable they are consuming have rat or pig gene.
which way our politicians are known to take stands are known to our people.the MNC comes with vast amount of money to buy their interests n also our media to create a suitable climate in our country neccesitating or justifying the need to introduce GE foods.a case may be the sudden rise in food prices n the various statements of our agriculture minister sharad pawar.and the opposition parties agitating on non issues like shahrukh khan, sachin tendulkar or ipl.
years back he was instrumental in bringing Enron to solve maharashtras power shortage problem.even then in spite of opposition a climate was created to justify enron.there were power cuts even in mumbai/thane.
today the chairman n board members of enron are involved in huge financial frauds n their plant a dabhol is a drain on tax payers money.how much enron has helped in solving maharashtras power problems and at what costs are not known.
today the technoligically developed nations of europe have said no to GE crops,
WHY SHOULD INDIA SAY YES?
how will brinjals solve our food problems?today its brinjals tommorrow it will be a wide variety of crops.
one request is to come out in various indian languages(translated)so that the vast majority which do not understand english can read n know bout the issues.
appealing on basis of religion especially to those groups who are forbidden to consume non vegetarian foods(hindu vaishnavs, brahmins, etc, jains) or forbidden to consume 1 particular animal(muslims)or animals which are slaughtered in 1 particular way only(parsis, jews, muslims).in a religously sensitive nation like india this will evoke deep public outcry.
[...] differ from mine, but when people twist science in order to scare people, I simply have to react. Greenpeace India lists all of the same old stories – can’t they find anything more recent? At least they [...]
When will men learn no to fool around with Nature?
We should propose that these minister who are proposing these GM modified food items to be tested on them first for next 5-10yrs before passing it to us.they should be guinea pig here.
