Stop Genetic Junk from Entering The Indian Food Chain Ecosystem!!
Say Good Bye to Healthy Food, Say Ta-Ta to Mouthwatering Recipes & Wholesome Meals Cooked to Perfection…if…
But First, Learn The Shocking Truth that will Stop You Cold And Make you Shiver with Fear For Your Children and India’s Future Generations.
Read the ACTUAL FACTS of Scientific Fraud In Studying The Harmful Effects of Genetically Modified Crops And Get Outraged.
Learn how Government officials are Chamchas of the GM Industry and are trying to sell India’s Food Security.
Last year, with your help, Greenpeace and other civil society organizations managed to stop a major disaster from taking place: The introduction of genetically modified crops into the Indian food chain. The GM companies are trying very hard to get approval for a genetically modified variety of Brinjal called Bt Brinjal.
At that time, Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh agreed to postpone the approval until further talks with citizens were held. Those talks have started now! The time has come for you to raise your voice.
Take Action to Stop this Genetic Contamination Now!
Mail Jairam Ramesh directly with the form on the right, and tell him to make a decision and say NO to Bt Brinjal! The right decision will secure us, the lives of our children, India’s food security, and future generations will thank us for uniting to save India from the dangers of genetically modified crops.
We are standing at the edge of a major shift in our agricultural practices. If the wrong decision gets taken, thousands of years of farming practices will disappear in one stroke of the pen. This is when you must raise your voice.
The situation is urgent. If you read the reports, you will be upset! You will be totally surprised to realize that we DO NOT NEED Bt Brinjal. You will be frightened to learn that genetically modified crops are a dangerous cooking recipe for the environment.
You will get shocked by the total and complete scientific fraud by so-called experts. They are silently trying to pass approval for this vegetable. It is not properly tested for human safety or ecological safety.
Vested interests and possibly corrupt people have gone deep inside the government and want to sell India’s food security to the highest bidder!
If this happens healthy, uncontaminated food, will not be the right of every citizen, it will be the privilege of the super rich few.
Right now, our Honorable Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh is holding consultation talks across seven cities in India. This is an invite only meeting but you do not need to be in the meeting room. You can stand outside and show your concern. If you are in any of the following cities on the corresponding dates, I strongly urge you to join the Greenpeace team in telling our Honorable Minister that we do not want genetic junk contaminating the Indian ecosystem. Click the link for each of these cities.
- Kolkata 13-Jan
- Bhubaneswar 16-Jan
- Ahmedabad 19-Jan
- Nagpur 27-Jan
- Chandigarh 29-Jan
- Hyderabad 31-Jan
- Bangalore 6-Feb
If you are not in these cities, we still need to fight this. I cannot do it alone. Greenpeace cannot do it alone. I need your help. India needs your help. Desperately. It is time to take action now. Go to this link and demand from Jairam Ramesh to put an end to genetic junk.
Bt Brinjal: We DO NOT NEED It
Firstly, there is ample evidence to prove that that genetically modified food crops are bad. They will have potential negative impacts on health and environment. In fact, with each passing day there is more and more evidence that tampering with nature is bad for humans and the environment. Most of the countries in the world have banned the commercial release of GM food. The latest countries to ban genetically modified crops are Germany & France. This was done after intense study . They finally discovered that genetically modified food causes harm to the environment. Therefore, humans will also be harmed badly by it.
Secondly, The humble ‘baigan’ is a native of the Indian subcontinent. For thousands of years the Indian farmer has cultivated brinjal. India is the center of diversity for the brinjal from the last 4000 years. Our famers have developed through healthy agricultural practices more than 2500 variations of the brinjal in all these thousands of years. It is also one of our staple diets. I love ‘baigan-ka-bartha’, don’t you? However, I love it WITHOUT GENETIC MODIFICATION. We need to keep it that way.
Also, our farmers and government have developed farming practices without using either pesticides or genetic junk.
Genetic Interference – A Dangerous Cooking Recipe
The genetic modification introduces a toxic gene into the Brinjal. This gene is supposed to kill the Brinjal’s main enemy in the farm – the Fruit and Shoot Borer (FSB) pest. That is the theory. And this is what the genetic modification companies want you to believe.
But the truth is that the National Agricultural Research System, which is our Government research system, has already found Non-Chemical Integrated Pest Management agricultural practices to manage the FSB problem without using genetic junk.
Even though the FSB may get killed, it is not the end. The only happy ending will be the fat profits lining the GM companies’ pockets. For everyone else, including the humans who run these companies, the toxic gene has entered the food chain now. And it will NEVER GO AWAY.
Besides, once the FSB is gone a whole range of other pests will rise up to take its place. If you remove the tiger from its territory, the leopard will move in. It is common sense. The farmers will now have to use more pesticide than ever to fight the other pests.
Once it enters the food chain, we are doomed. We already eat so much pesticide with our food. Most of the sprayed on pesticide we can wash off before cooking. With Bt Brinjal, you cannot do that. The TOXIC PESTCIDE IS INSIDE THE BRINJAL GENES. Bt brinjal also has antibiotic resistant genes. This means that there is a chance that bacteria in the human stomach will acquire this resistance and we will become antibiotic resistant. Which in turn means our resistance to antibiotic drugs will increase. Which in turn means….
Oh, forget it! You know what will happen… the entire food chain and everything will get contaminated. When we get sick, we will not be able to take life saving antibiotic medicines. No more delicious meals cooked to perfection. Restaurant menus will now have ‘Bt Brinjal ka bartha’.
Controlling Food Production: The Hidden Agenda
So why are they genetically modifying the brinjal when it is so easily available and it really does not need modification. There is a darker, deeper, and more mysterious agenda that nobody talks about. A genetically modified vegetable is patent protected.
Like Bt cotton, the only GM crop approved for commercial cultivation in the country, the seed prices are double the price of normal seeds. Most of it is going as royalty to the company who “owns” the gene. In this case Monsanto, the American seed giant. With Mahyco’s Bt Brinjal, farmers will have to come back to the company every year for seeds as these cannot be saved and used, thereby making them dependent on the company for seeds.
Seed companies are getting into GM crops because they want to CONTROL OUR RIGHT TO FOOD. They are using Bt Brinjal as a test case. If the government approves Bt Brinjal, there are 56 crops ready to enter the market. 41 are genetically modified food crops. Our environment will be damaged beyond all repair. We will no longer have the right to eat what we grow.
There are many GM Companies both local and multinational waiting to hijack India’s food security for private profit without any regard to human health, human safety, or the environment. We will be paying royalty for what we cook and what we eat. And where will it stop?
We have to stop this now. You have to stop it before it starts now!!
Insist that Jairam Ramesh protect our right to food security without paying royalty to anyone!
Bt Brinjal Bio-Safety Studies – Shocking Scientific Fraud
This is the most shocking part. The scientists and government officials who we trust to do what is good for India & Indians is betraying our trust. Be careful, reading this will make you angry…
The Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) is a government body supposed to give bio-safety approvals for GM crops. That is the GEAC should approve that the GM Crop is safe for both humans and the environment. Normally there should be independent trials and very careful testing to prove that the product is biologically safe.
You will be upset to learn that GEAC handed over the bio-safety testing to Mahyco, the company who owns Bt Brinjal. That also we can accept. But you will be totally shocked, scared, angry, afraid, and every emotion you can feel when you realize the type of testing they did.
First of all, do you know how much time it took to get the results of the testing? Greenpeace had to file an RTI and fight for 30 months along with a PIL filed in the Supreme Court just to get the real bio-safety study information out. Every step of the way Mahyco and the government bodies GEAC and Department of Biotechnology fought us tooth and nail to stop the release of this information. Finally, after a lot of struggle Greenpeace was successful. The Central Information Commission said, “public interest is more important than private commercial interest.”
But imagine our shock when we saw the study results. Do you know the duration of the longest test, that too on laboratory rats? 90 days!! That’s right!! After fighting with the courts for 30 long months, imagine how it feels to see that the longest test was just for 90 days. For medicines, international laws are there to make sure they test the drugs for many years! But in India, they are ready to makes us guinea pigs!!! We have to fight this!!!
They do not want the Indian public to learn the truth about their fraud bio-safety testing. They wanted to hide this dangerous and disturbing information about the unscientific, eyewash testing they did. They wanted to potentially contaminate the Indian ecosystem with potentially biologically harmful and potentially humanly dangerous, genetically toxic vegetables. This has a high risk of destroying both our culture and our humanity.
When eminent toxicologists and nutritional biochemists from around the world saw the report, they were stunned to see the evident disregard for scientific procedure.
Significant data that should have raised alarm bells where quietly suppressed. GEAC tried to give approval in a hurry. That was when, with your support, Greenpeace along with the other NGOs organizations raised its voice in protest. Thankfully, Jairam Ramesh, our Honorable Environment Minister finally agreed to postpone this approval and issued this notification for public consultations.
Officials are Chamchas of the GM Industry
Now you may be wondering why the GEAC has been so one sided. It is obvious isn’t it? So far, there is no direct evidence of bribery or corruption. But members on the GEAC leave the organization and join the GM industry. At least one member of the GEAC’s Expert Committee set up to examine the bio-safety issue is under Vigilance investigation for granting undue favors to Mahyco. 3 of them were directly involved in the development and biosafety tests of Bt brinjal in some stage or the other. These are very powerful people. They are able to influence at very high levels. The Ministry of Agriculture put undue pressure on the GEAC Expert Committee Chairman to give the approval. The Department of Biotechnology used all possible tactics to stop release of public health and safety information. There is no doubt about it. The GM companies have managed to get their fingers deep into the system. And they have powerful backers. They are trying their level best to mix up the truth about genetically modified crops. Every step of the way they are trying to silence the truth.
What YOU NEED TO DO!
Now you know the complete story. There are three things I request you to do.
First: Sign the online petition and demand from our Honorable Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh to stop all approvals for genetically modified foods. We DO NOT NEED GENETICALLY MODIFIED JUNK in our food chain ecosystem.
Second: Tell your friends about this issue. Ask them to sign the petition. AND ASK THEM TO TELL THEIR FRIENDS ABOUT IT! PLEASE!!!!
This is so important. We have to make a big big big push to raise public opinion to gigantic levels.
Third: If you are in any of the seven cities be there for the meeting. Show your support for pure healthy food.
Get started: Demand from Jairam Ramesh to stop it all now!!!
Thank you! God Bless. Jai Hind!
Jai Krishna
Sustainable Agriculture Campaigner

Often, undue propaganda and negative hype is as dangerous as the very product one is fighting against – untested and medically harmful agriculture products.
Greenpeace is looked up to as an impassioned and dedicated promoter of not just all things healthy, ethical and natural, but also progressive. Do NOT condemn BT Brinjal if you do not have complete diagnostics on its inception, spread, advantages and consequences, good or bad. Do not join corrupt cartels and and naysayers in destroying something that could feed the hungry. Research, understand and then propagate the truth – this is what you should be REALLY doing.
I may not know the beginning or end of BT Brinjal and its manufacturers just as I don’t of many other genetically produced agricultural products.
But I do know this: developing nations (and India IS still one of them, if you peel away the urban layers) are in dire need of safe, healthy, environmentally friendly and quick-producing foodstuffs and agro products to feed its people. Because we as nations may not know where the next meal is coming from, but we also don’t know how to stop making babies and start looking at the big picture of our race and our planet. Thus, we have populations that are bigger than our capacity to feed them and we are creating an environment of spiralling doom without commensurate positive results of welfare or balance. In short: our farms are not producing enough food and we’re looking at a future of several million hungry people DESPITE large-scale destruction of forest cover to create agricultural lands.
What does one do? One develops, with political and people support, products that are genetically modified such that their benefits remain the same, but investment into producing them are far more optimum, with a faster yield. Producers of such technology can be dangerous if they are not careful, yes, but do not put a blanket ban on all such products and companies and destroy their will and research in bringing about something good for our nations.
Can YOU give everyone a practical, sustainable solution to the world’s environment and food problems? Can YOU get down and dirty to bring technology that will feed millions at a fraction of the cost of outdated products and not having to raze entire forests for the farming of these? Perhaps not. So instead, let’s not over-congratulate NOR beat down establishments that are trying to make a difference.
Put something positive up on your site too, dear Greenpeace, about products and companies that are indeed doing good work to balance nature and the human force’s needs. Constant naysayers just sound cynical and fatalistic after a while.
Oh, and by the way, I will NOT sign the petition shooting down the influx of genetically modified foodstuff. I will NOT endorse something – good or bad – based on what a few people have to shout out as propaganda with no practical proof or paperwork.
This is the way of the future. Caution and responsibility are key in the production of these, but unless we can become a few billion people less and a few million iotas of environment safety more, there is no way to stop a large chunk of the world from going hungry in the next few decades.
You what’s more dangerous than ignorance and remaining quiet to serious issues?
Half-baked knowledge, delirious propaganda and spreading incorrect and potentially dangerous information.
Stop. Learn. Educate yourself. And THEN spread the word.
I still do not understand why people are making so much sound on Bt Brinjal. Let me quote from Shri Jai Krishna’s post.
Quote:
“Secondly, The humble ‘baigan’ is a native of the Indian subcontinent. We need to keep it that way.”
Unquote.
Now, Bt stands for Bascillus turingensis, a naturally occuring soil bacteria which was the agent which helped the Indian farmers develop through the so called “healthy agriculture practice” more than 2500 variations of the brinjal (in all these thousands of years). What crime has the scientist done by achieving the same result in a short time through the same agent Bascillus turingensis or Bt in short?!!!!! Was it not genetic transformation taking place over a period of 4000 years?!!!!
However, I have no comments to make on multinationals or other agencies who make undue profits or blackmail farmers with patents and other restrictions. I am an ordinary citizen of India and not an agent of anybody. I welcome scientific achievements which are good for the nation, especially for a disproportionally growing population which will find it incresingly difficult to feed on the existing bioresources as it is now.
BT Brinjal may be harmful or may not be . It is too early to predict . Actually , non scientist campaigners are making the subject more complicated . What we need advice from experts and not farmers or politicians. Even Galileo was imprisoned for saying that earth rotates around the sun . Please have some respect for the scientists . Do you know how beneficial it will be for the poor people if BT Brinjal is all right ! Let there be a wide scientific debate not political fight on the streets.
Why are we so worried about one BT plant? Simple this is just the beginning. Soon we will have more and more. Its not going to stop, how many wars are we willing to fight? If it takes months for getting one RTI answered, how are you going to fight the rest of the plants already in the pipeline? Yes there is a way. If we are ready for it the simplest way to do it is not fight the government, its not going to help because our politicians are not saints. All it will take to change their opinion is a little extra cash or a percentage of the profit to the party in rule. We have to do it the Gandhian way, simple just follow the father of the nation. Yes total non-cooperation and boycott of all the seed companies involved. Its that simple to whom can the seed companies sell to if no one wants to buy the product. We need to educate our farmers on the effects of BT. Farmers are the only community who work for the country without any expectations. They feed our country at all costs even if they do not get any profit at times. Believe me if the farmers got together and take an oath to sell their products only at a marginal profit of 30% it will cost the country more than the oil deficit and the defence budgets combined. So the only way to solve this is to approach the farmers and get them to react. You don’t need the minister to come out against BT, all it will take is the farmer community declaring that they will not buy any seeds made by the companies pushing for GM seeds not just BT seeds but all their products and then we can see if these companies will have courage to take on the farmers.
Please publish the report on BT and GM that you have got through the RTI for all to see and judge the case for themselves.
dis is india
government dosen’t care about own ppl
dey juat want 2 make money 4 demself
dis is not only first case
thousand of things r sellin in india wch is banned in whole world
& even those western mncs who r rasing human rights q here
even western governmennts r forcing us 2 do
people are going nuts over such uncomplicated subject. how many of u eat brinjal?? there is plenty of brinjal farming in india, in excess….no shortage, firstly there is no need of modifying such a vegetable.. instead organic farming should be promoted…..
people are issueless and clueless….
There is no shortage of brinjal in India, infact in excess availability. I do not understand why so much interest to introduce GM bt brinjal. This is just insane. We must try to get GI status for some of our local brinjals like UDUPI GULLA, so that these multinationals stop meddling with the indegenous varieties being consumed for hundreds of years in India. The so called scientific community who are prorponents of the GM crops are talking crap. There are no independant clinical or ecological study done compregensively to prove that it has no effect on human nutrition. What we have is only the report by these industries in association with a couple of labs in India who are hand in glove with them in promoting just unwanted GM crops. We must stop this forthwith.
No real information about the harmful effects or otherwise is found in your piece and yet you conclude, “Now you know the complete story”. This sort of assertions and your whipping up emotions to urge us to act casts doubts on your authenticity. What we like is to know truly all facts -all pros and cons- from a recognized, expert in the field who is not an interested party. In the absence of this I am only left with doubts and confusions. so I am not signing any such appeal until I get some basic facts about the real issues. Public long to know the “complete story”; you have not given it.
Its JUST RIDICULOUS the way the fear psychosis has been spread about BT crops. If there was’nt SOME manner/level of genetic modification in ALL crops today… there would be serious starvation in the world. The FIRST issue is POPULATION CONTROL. Since we have FAILED hopelessly here, we have to able to feed at least most of the humans. Of course, earlier scientists were sponsored by governments to work and innovate for the common good. Now, they are promoted by private businesses who naturally, are motivated to generate profits. To scream oneself hoarse about the cancer causing/resistance to anti-biotics properties of BT crops and in the same breath say they need further testing is IDIOCY! Come on, doom-sayers… Wake up and smell the BT Flowers!
It’s one of the most HORRIFIC thing to genitically modify any thing as this leads to unknown & undesirable results both for the ENVIRONMENT & CONSUMERS. We should fight Tooth n Nail to STOP this. Advanced countries like Germany and France have banned GM Foods as these GM Foods are HARMFUL, has there been some BENIFIT in them these countries would be the FIRST one to APPROVE.
So lets UNITE & FIGHT COLLECTIVEly to fight the GM MENACE and STOP it.
Let’s PLEDGE that we will KEEP OUR COUNTRY free from any GM FOOD.
Arise o CITIZENS OF THE NATION AND STOP IT.

Is this a Green Peace venture? Because the Indian site for Green Peace is http://www.greenpeace.org/india
Any novel venture is always opposed. Are the insecticide, fertilizer, colours that we apply on our food items safe ? Is there any concrete evidence against genetically modified food ?
Go to http://www.pgportal.gov.in/ & lodge a complaint.
Already lodged 1 complaint, need more to follow :
“Sir/Ma’am,
I, as a responsible Indian citizen, would like to have your true reports about BT-BRINJAL (Genetically Modified) as we are having news that it’s going to do us good by the following ways only:
1. Increased prices of Seeds.
2. Lower our anti-biotic resistance.
3. Cause Cancer,. . .
Sir/Ma’am, I’d also like to please know the details regarding the TEST performed before its planned introduction in the market here.
Sir/Ma’am, I hope to receive the answer soon, before the decision is finally taken by our Honorable Environment Minister, Mr. Jairam Ramesh.
Thanking you in anticipation & waiting for a prompt reply,
Yours truly,
Amardip Sanan.”
I am against genetically modified food unless it is thouroughly tested. But over the years I heard it causes cancer, contamination of soil
dear I feel it is a romur spred by pestiside companies , As we aware that no gosping arrise when the posion mis mawa is found in sweet, but as any reserch is arrise, the mis compaining is start, as earlier we have seen during soybean, and BT cotton. actually to fulfill the requirement of food , it is necessary we adopt the new echonology to grow mopre otherwise that day is not far our a majority is die by the cause of less food.
It is quite obvious that BOTH SIDES are making money out of this controversy. We have recently seen how the HIMALYAN BLUNDER of Pachauri helped him get a Nobel prize and make him rich and famous. Now we have many more people who are ATTACKING the idea of technological innovation WITHOUT SUBSTANTIAL FACTS but simple idiotic arguments. They are pointing out that Mosanto or some multinational is going to make money and in the bargain collecting money from the public in the form of Donations under the pretext of doing a great service. If a multinational INVESTS SO MUCH IN RESEARCH they have every right to recover their investment as well as EARN MONEY. It is FAIR and HONEST. If Private enterprise does not spend on RESEARCH we would never have all the latest Communication Devices, Medical Diagnostic Equipment, Life Saving Drugs, etc. So let’s not make a FUSS about everything based on IRRATIONAL FEARS being fueled by so called activists who have DUBIOUS CREDENTIALS and NO SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE.
Why are we so concerned about Bt brinjals?
We have to bear with syntheticmilk, flies in cool drinks, insects in chocolates, cement based paint on Potatos, artificial Khya(used in our sweets),ghee made from tallow and now tea with colour, spices with horse shit and bricks, pulses with stones. We very well digest these easily so BT crops should not do much harm to us i feel.
hi
I’m a biotechnologist, the effect of a foreign gene (not belonging to the family or genus), is always uncertain, that too with a B thurengensis toxin in its skin is nice to see scientifically, but ethically it is absurd. there are thousands of varieties and methods of traditional food crops and vegitation methodologies, that have been lost in time. the instiutions that regularise the BT crops should look into other alternatives before falling into this deep cervix which will affect the farmers economy and the consumers health.
1. We should only think and talk about technological ‘IMPROVEMENT’ as arrival of superior technology will be defeating endeavor.
2. We need to take holistic and balanced view on ECONOMIC development at grassroots level and PROTECTING OF INDIGENOUS and TRADITIONAL.
2. I will like to ask you
a) Is mixing UREA in milk Indian tradition and you support and protect that?
b) Giving harmful injections to cattle to increase production and same injections for enlarging Mooli and Baigan ( so rampant in rural India)?
c) do you support dirty , unhealthy and filthy food ( of course Indian TYraditional) being sold on streets?
3. Like any technology BT Brinjol will stay and this is fact backed by long history of scientific advancements. If there is doubt it must be brought forward and may be more research be put in to prove efficacy.
5) Intellectual Property right protection in any case is necessary otherwise who will do research for Agriculture and for your health? You may suggest curbs on misuse of this right.
6) Has any one thought ever that BT might be giving jitters to companies selling pesticides who are going to be negatively affected? ( or is opposition encouraged by …?)
I’m all for healthy foods, because in this age getting children to eat healthy is a challenge for any mother. With the invasion of fast foods, and junk foods, healthy eating has taken a backseat. Even the humble idli and dosas have been replaced by burgers and pizzas and fries…
But I’m so not into farmers losing their livelihood, because some “EDUCATED” person thinks to build a company that produces better and bigger vegetables. Most of India is farmland and its not right to displace the farmers from thier homes and industries.
Fully agree…No farmers should use GM’s product…save indian Agriculture system
If you go to Ladakh you will be amazed to see that the vegetables are so healthy. They grow cabbages as big as pumpkins, and turnips as big as cabbages…. why because they don’t use any chemical fertilizer. They are healthy, strong… their health index is the highest in the country and they are intellingent and their immune system is very strong.
To get good healthy vegetables we need to apply organic, old school method. The introduction of chemical fertilizer and toxins in the seeds may increase production but in the long run… it is harming our ecology and us as a part of the food chain.
I guess anything that prolongs a normal life span of the vegetable to increase the shelf life…. (not natural ) should not be encouraged…its a wrong decision, wrong content for Us, Kids..Nxt Generation..!!!
End of the Day.. We are What We Eat !!!
The only reason which makes me sign this petition is the fact that the GM version of the brinjal is a patented one and is owned by commercial companies. Due to this they will be n a position to control the amount of seed that is available in the market. This is virtually equivalent to controlling the amount of production and hence the price (by simple demand and supply ratio).
I have not come across any scientific pros or cons for the Bt. Brinjal except that it is immune to one of the most common pests. So i have no idea whether it is good or bad for health. This is what we want to know.
If a proper scientific research says that there is nothing in bt. brinjal that can harm humans then i have nothing against it except the commercial factor which i think can be resolved by the government if it wants to.
research must go on …it may contain cancerous ingredients but what about other food products which we use today like ajinomoto, some contents in milk and also pesticides on fruits such as grapes.so dont say”say no to gm crops’ since u cant find any alternatives for this.
research must go on. We have elected the government to take care of of the country and its people they cant play with our health like this.
JUST A TEMPORARY RELIEF N NOT A VICTORY.THE AGRICULTURE MINISTER WILL TRY ALL TACTICS TO DIVERT PUBLIC ATTENTION.SRK IS JUST ONE EXAMPLE.ONLY A MASS MOVEMENT CAN HELP.
