Parameters used to rank companies in this guide.
Without a doubt, there are innumerable parameters to access safe and sustainable food. However, this guide will focus only on parameters related to the use of genetically engineered foods in India.
India does not currently permit any genetically modified (GM) food crop to be commercially cultivated. However this does not mean that there may be no GM food ingredients in the food produced in India. As we have seen, there have been hundreds of acres of field trials and unmonitored processed and raw grain imports into the country. Therefore, “No GM seeds being sold” is not enough to assure consumers that our food is GM free today or will be GM free in the future.
To facilitate this ardous task of identification, we at Greenpeace India contacted some of the popular food brands asked them about their policy on the use of Genetically Modified ingredients apart from their other policies on sustainable agriculture.
In this report, we have categorised companies strictly based on their responses regarding their policy on the use of Genetically Modified ingredients. Using this as a starting point, companies are listed as either Green or Red.
The Green List: Companies in this list have assured us that they do not use any genetically modified ingredients in their products. We have confirmed this mostly through written declarations from companies and emails. This list also includes progressive companies which have a declared policy not to use GM ingredients at all at any point of time and the ones which have merely stated that they are GM free at present, and have not stated their policy for future, when GM crops might be approved.
The Red List: Companies in this list may have products containing genetically modified ingredients. We have included them in the Red List after making our best efforts possible, writing to them, following up with phone calls and emails.
This list includes:
- Companies that have stated they would use genetically modified ingredients in their products.
- Companies that have responded to Greenpeace, but have mentioned nothing about their stand on using genetically modified ingredients in their foods.
- Companies that have not responded to Greenpeace for over 45 days.
* It is possible that companies that have not responded are open to using GM ingredients in their products. Consumers will be forced to believe so, unless they clarify otherwise. We alert consumers to keep a watch out for their products.
Unfortunately, due to the polluting nature of Genetically Engineered crops, some accidental contamination of non-GE crops may occur. While this guide can provide a good basis for avoiding GE food, the only guarantee is to stop the environmental release of GMOs.
It is also essential to note that while this is the first step towards identifying companies adopting a GM-free policy, there are several parameters Greenpeace will take into account in the future to ensure companies keep their promises to consumers.
Among others, these will include a no-GM policy – which means a long-term commitment to GM-free products; ensuring that that do not practice double-standards in labeling, have necessary systems to track the lines of raw materials, and monitoring systems to trace contamination.
In the future, this guide will increase its scope.

Your campaign looks to be a bit biased……is the campaign against Nestle only or against genetically modified food products. Your campaign seems directed only against nestle….? Why so?
Hi Ayush, the campaign is against Genetically modified food products. There are many companies that fall in the red list. However it is best to get change one step at a time. Since Nestle is the worst of the lot we decided to start with them. When Nestle changes its policy we will move to the next company on the red list.
But dear Greenpeace, why there isn’t any reply from your part about the “Pepsico’s being pro-GE” raised by Harry? I know that nothing could “buy” Greenpeace. But your explanation is needed in this topic to clear the smog of confusion from us, the laymen’s minds!

But where were and are you guys, for the unscrupulous products manufactured & sold by our own Indian manufacturers in our own Motherland itself.
It is double standards & clearly looks like orchestrated by the owners of this website to extort money.
I would have been elated if you guys had raised the same hue & cry for all the cola drinks manufactured by Indian companies (of course they are called franchisees).
Please fight and hit the gundaas of our country and automatically Nestle’ will stop selling their products, as they also evade the law through these gundaas.

@Harry @Ankit @Anirban @Sandhya – This campaign is about consumers asking a company to adopt a GM free policy. When we wrote to all these companies, including Pepsi, asking them about their policy on GMOs, they replied to us officially stating that do not use GMOs in their products. This makes them ‘green’ according to our parameters. Nestle India, however, stated that they believe in ‘responsible application of gene technology’, thus placing them in ‘red’. Among the companies in ‘red’, Nestle is the largest and most well known name in the country with large stake in baby food products. Therefore, it must lead the way among other big brands to initiate a GM free policy.
However, we also recognize that it is imperative for Pepsi to have a long term policy on non-use of GMs and should put processes in place so that no contamination happens in future. Greenpeace will continue to keep an eye on these companies.

I’m all for banning the propagation of GE food to an unquestioning and barely educated market, but where does Nestle say they use it?????
Someone picked this campaign and channeled a lot of money, time, web space and riled supporters into it and now GP has to find the most ridiculous and twisted ways to keep the campaign afloat.
A word to GP: Honesty would help, come clean… Do not slander a company for something they don’t do. Reword your poll statement. Apologize to the company and clear their name.
Reaffirm the stance of the poll-ers, hopefully that would be ‘Indians never would want GE food’.
And then bow out!

I’d say, to each his own! The consumers are wise enough to make their decisions. Howeever, that does not imply that the companies will take us for fools. They must clearly specify on the product packages if GE ingredients have been used.
Is the Indian government not aware of the hazards of large scale pollution caused by testing of genetically engineered food crops?? Not a big surprise in a country where most of us have chosen to turn a blind eye to exploitation.

The trend to control nature has had serious repercussions. People live longer now but less happier. life is not a series of happy moments but a series of problems ( to be solved) and challenges to be faced.
All this because we wanted to prove that we are mature enough now to control nature and we are now more qualified than nature.
This temporary blindless to see tsunamis, earthquakes, typhoons, newer diseases, cancer , mutation in terms of sex , psychological problems, social problems, loss of happiness and inborne human talents( inner strength) is the cause of this temporary megalomania where we want to control nature.

It is the sinister plan of the big corporations along with the UN and WHO to propagate the “AGENDA 21″ ( google and youtube this term). Disguised as sustainable development , the AGENDA 21 actually is to depopulate the planet by 90% , yes mass extermination through scientific tyranny. Many simultanious attacks would be carried out in the name of scientific good to humanity and in the name of ” It is good for you and for your benifit” to name a few of these open attack on us are given below ( people please do your research and search these given below terms in youtube and google before the UN takes down the internet)
1) Genetic Modified Food : They say it is good for you and would give highest yield etc but in reality it is the biggest weapon to kill as the GE food create many allergies and permanently damage the cells of intestines , drop your immune system, create cancer and sterile the reproductive system.
2) Chemtrails (or Weather Modifaction or in India it is called cloud seeding) : Biggest fraud of its kind and would be the largest weapon of mass extermination. They say it is for your good , for you we can squeeze extra rain for you and not worry about the persistent heavy chemical spray thrice daily for all 7 days/365 a year because the chemical spray is in permissible amounts ….*BullSh*T , people they are lying te metals found in chemical spray are BARIUM , ALUMINUM and SILVER IODIDE (now you are smart generation needless to say “go and research the harmful effects o these chemicals on human body” ). This is the perfect plan to attack on our respiratory system and spray whatever and whenever they want on us. The USA f*cked up all the world weather by doing it for more than 10 years and also through UN this has started in whole of the Europe , Australia , North Africa , South America and India. The UN – WHO created the draughts and now selling this cloud seeding/chemtrails to India. Citizens of India wake up all your tax money is sprayed on you as chemicals everyday , OPEN YOUR EYES and LOOK UP. I have lived in the UK for more than 7 years and I have seen alll of these things happening there and I was wrong in my believe that nothing sort of this will happen in India but I am shocked to see that India is fully sold.
3) False Man Made Earthquakes. The USA posses the HAARP technology ( yes youtube HAARP and also google it) and on will they can create earthquake of 7.5 or above anywhere , so if India resist to their sinister plans of selling the whole country to then in the name of NEW WORLD ORDER , you know next would be series of earthquakes in Indian Metros , terrorising to take away all your freedoms.
4) Terrorism: Wake Up Indians the AL-QAIDA is funded by CIA and the whole war on terror is the biggest hoax to take away your civil liberties in the name of providing safety against terrorist. So always remember when the UN – USA says in the news that terrorist can do another 26/11 in India , it means the CIA is planning another one or if news says their can be no tolerance and India will go for war against Pakistan that also means that this is the UN-USA plan to destablilise the region and create war situation to get their selfish and sinister motives fulfilled.
5) C02 the cause of global warming : Biggest fraud of the millinium , there are more than 30.000 top enviornmental and climatologist scientist who have signed the petition against this fraud , it is the SUN CYCLE that causes temprature variation on all the planets even Mars polar caps are melting so is the saturn , uranus , even plutos. The NASA knew this and because this is an AGENCY and publically funded by BID CORPORATIONS and the agenda of big corporations was to get huge benifit and UN-WHO could tax whole of the planets population and control the lives of people in the name of C02. In real fact the more the C02 better would be for the plant growth , the better the plant growth better would be our food reserves and atmospheric oxygen level. GOD is great and so does HIS power of devine balance provided to Mother Nature.
6) Pharmachutical and Vaccination Tyranny : Dear Indians this is the best weapon of WHO to depopulates us, what more should I say the H!N! is patented …YES you can have a patent on anything if you design or manufacture it and this is exactly done by the WHO and they have spread it in the world. Do your research again; youtube and also google” H1N1 MANMADE”. All of the vaccination contain” THEMEROSAL” which is MERCURY metal and they say oh its with in permissible limits …BULLSH*T …do your own research and see how many cases of AUTISM in children who are vaccinated.
7) Full Body Scanners at AIRPORT : Most dangerous as you would be bomabrded by the spectrun of radiations which ofcourse they would says it is good for you and harmless but even a DONKEY KNOWS that ionizing radiation in the X-ray spectrum damages and mutates both chromosomal DNA and structural proteins in human cells. If this damage is not repaired, it can lead to cancer. New research shows that even very low doses of X-ray can delay or prevent cellular repair of damaged DNA, raising questions about the safety of routine medical X-rays.
